Dining in France: prepare your visit
A practical guide to French restaurant menus, booking, service hours, free drinking water and payment, with useful French phrases and official sources.
Start with the date, time and exact address
Check which branch you are booking, the number of guests and the proposed arrival time. A café may be open while its kitchen is closed. Ask when the last food order is taken, especially between lunch and dinner or after an evening event. Keep the booking confirmation and tell the venue if your arrival changes.
Read the meal format before comparing prices
A set menu may include two or three courses, with a choice or a fixed sequence. “À la carte” means choosing individual dishes. Look for drinks, side dishes and supplements, and make sure the offer applies to your service time. A tasting menu may require the whole table to choose the same format: ask before booking.
Water, service and the bill
Customers may request free drinking water. Bottled mineral water is a separate purchase. Listed restaurant prices include the stated service; a tip is voluntary in France. Check the itemised bill and ask about accepted payment methods before ordering if you rely on a specific card.
Explain dietary and access needs directly
State the ingredient or access requirement precisely. A vegetarian option does not establish how a kitchen handles allergens. A wheelchair tag does not describe every doorway, table or toilet. Ask for a clear response from the venue before relying on a booking; this directory does not certify those arrangements.

How to read this directory
The main directory and place profiles are in French. Each profile identifies the available sources and their snapshot date. Illustrations do not show the real venue. Missing information means unknown, and list order is not a quality ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Is “menu” the same as the list of dishes?
In French, a menu often means a set meal. “La carte” usually means the list of individual dishes. Check the courses, drinks and supplements before ordering.
Does an OSM opening time guarantee that food is served?
No. Opening times describe the venue, and kitchen service may be shorter. Confirm the date, arrival time and last food order directly with the restaurant.
