Choose a bar for non-alcoholic drinks: flavour, ingredients and atmosphere

An interesting non-alcoholic selection offers more than one sweet mixture. Compare flavour, ingredients, serving size and how the venue welcomes the choice.

The essentials

Look for several drink styles and ask about the exact products when zero alcohol is essential. Compare sweetness, serving size and prices, and choose a setting where you can order without having to justify yourself.

  • Seek a varied selection.
  • Check ingredients for a strict zero requirement.
  • Compare sweetness, acidity and serving size.
  • Choose an atmosphere that works for the whole group.

Look for fresh, bitter, spicy, fruity or less sweet choices. Tea, infusions, spices, botanicals and sparkling water may create different styles; syrups are only one possible ingredient.

Ask whether sweetness or acidity can be adjusted. A composed non-alcoholic drink may use several preparations and take similar serving time to another cocktail. Compare the composition and quantity, not the name alone.

Check the exact product

Dealcoholised products may retain alcohol, and some bitters or preparations may contain it. If strict zero is essential, ask about the precise products and preparation rather than relying on the word mocktail.

Staff should be able to check or explain what is unknown. When information is unclear, choose a preparation with identified ingredients. The DGCCRF explains how dealcoholised wine categories and labelling differ; the term alone does not describe every drink recipe.

Make the evening work for everyone

A mixed group should have understandable prices and several choices on both parts of the menu. Food, music and comfortable seating contribute to the experience too.

A guest choosing no alcohol is not automatically responsible for driving everyone home. Arrange transport in advance and respect each person’s agreed role.

Read broad claims carefully

Non-alcoholic does not by itself establish low sugar, low calories or suitability for every personal requirement. Ask about a particular ingredient when it matters instead of treating a general wellbeing description as confirmation.

Keep enjoyment and the pace of the evening central. Water and food can be part of the order, whatever drinks the group chooses.

Common questions

Does mocktail mean strictly zero alcohol?

The word alone is insufficient. Check the exact ingredients and products if zero is essential.

Why can it cost as much as another cocktail?

Its preparations, ingredients and serving time may be similar. Compare the actual offer.

How can I find a less sweet choice?

Ask about tea-based, bitter or acidic styles and whether syrup can be reduced.
