Vegetarian dining: read the complete dish and ask useful questions
A considered vegetarian option does more than remove meat from a dish. Look for a complete preparation with its own flavour, texture and composition.

The essentials
Read the whole dish: vegetables, pulses, grains, eggs or dairy depending on your diet, sauce and garnish. If your criteria are strict, ask about stocks, cheese, frying and condiments. A dish designed around plants may offer more than an adapted garnish.
- Distinguish vegetarian, vegan and no visible meat.
- Look for a complete main dish.
- Check sauces, stocks, cheese and preparation.
- Ask about the whole meal, including dessert.
Clarify the menu’s vocabulary
Vegetarian excludes meat and fish; vegan also excludes ingredients of animal origin. Menu labels may be used differently, so confirm composition for strict requirements.
Icons are useful only with a clear legend. Ask what is in the stock, sauce, cheese, dough and final garnish.
Look for a dish designed as a main course
Texture, seasoning and a satisfying base all matter. Pulses, grains, tofu, tempeh, eggs or dairy may accompany vegetables depending on the preparation and your diet.
Read the whole menu. A suitable starter, considered main course and compatible dessert provide more choice than one modified salad.
- Identified main ingredients
- Described sauce and seasoning
- Coherent accompaniments
- Portion suited to the meal
- Compatible dessert or alternative
Explore actual preparations
Many culinary traditions use vegetables, pulses, grains and spices. That does not remove the need to check stocks, fish sauces, animal fats or added garnishes.
Do not reduce a tradition to a label. Read the current menu and ask about the day’s preparations. Search by a dish or cuisine as well as the word vegetarian.
Plan for different diets in one group
Read and share the menu before proposing a venue. Several choices for each person make the decision easier than relying on one adapted option.
For a shared menu or large group, submit the number of vegetarian and vegan meals by the requested deadline. Confirm that they are complete dishes rather than side portions assembled at the last minute.
Common questions
Is a dish without visible meat always vegetarian?
No. Stock, sauce, cooking fat or cheese may not match your dietary criteria. Ask about the composition.
How can I find plant-based choices?
Try the declared vegetarian service filter and search for the cuisine or specific preparation. A label does not establish allergy suitability.
What should I ask for a group menu?
Confirm the number of compatible dishes, their ingredients, alternatives and the deadline for submitting dietary choices.
