Book a restaurant in France: timing, requirements and confirmation
A useful booking does more than select a time. It aligns the venue, the pace of the meal and the needs of the table before you arrive.

The essentials
Use the official channel, give the exact party size and essential requirements, then read the time, address and conditions in the confirmation. Check the service times again on the day.
- Plan ahead for groups, small dining rooms and weekend services.
- Mention allergies, access requirements and children when you enquire.
- Confirm deposits, fixed menus and cancellation conditions.
- Tell the venue about delays or changes in party size.
When should you book?
Capacity, day and meal format matter more than prestige. A weekday lunch may be available at short notice, while a small dining room on Saturday evening fills quickly. Tasting menus, popular brunches and venues with few tables often need more advance planning.
For six people or more, contact the venue directly. It may need to rearrange tables, adjust service or propose a shared menu. For a birthday or a meal before a show, enquire once the group’s timetable is stable.
- Weekday lunch: check the previous day or that morning.
- Friday or Saturday evening: plan several days ahead when possible.
- Groups: contact the venue before confirming invitations.
- Busy dates: obtain the deposit and cancellation conditions in writing.
Give the restaurant the information it needs
State the actual number of adults and children, your preferred time and a contact number. Mention any fixed departure time. A kitchen can consider your timetable when it knows about a train or show; it cannot infer that requirement after you order.
Describe an allergy precisely and distinguish it from a preference or intolerance. Ask whether the team can handle the requirement. For access, describe the practical need: a step-free entrance, suitable passage width, accessible toilet, wheelchair space or a quieter table. Do not leave an essential requirement only in a comment box: ask for explicit confirmation.
Organise a group booking
A reduced or shared menu can help everyone eat at a similar pace. Ask about the minimum party size, the deadline for confirming numbers, vegetarian choices and late withdrawals.
Clarify payment before the day: one bill or separate payments, drinks included, and how a deposit is deducted. Obtain agreement before bringing a cake, decorating the table or playing music; these requests may involve charges or practical restrictions.
- Final party size and common arrival time
- Menu, drinks and dietary options
- Deposit and cancellation deadline
- How the bill will be settled
- Available time and any private space
Read the confirmation carefully
Check the venue’s exact name and address, especially for a business with several locations. Verify the date, time, party size, any time limit on the table and accepted special requests. Keep the booking reference.
On the day, consult the official site or call if something is unclear. A terrace may close because of the weather, or an event may affect access. If a delay of more than ten to fifteen minutes becomes likely, contact the venue: its stated conditions may allow it to release the table.
Common questions
How far ahead should I book?
A few days often suit an ordinary service. Allow more time for Saturday evenings, small rooms, tasting menus, groups or a busy date.
Can I change the party size afterwards?
Contact the venue promptly. An extra guest may require another table; fewer guests may affect the deposit or group conditions.
What if an allergy is not confirmed?
Do not treat the request as accepted. Call again and choose an alternative if the team cannot provide a clear answer.
